B5891 Almost Perfect

When I look at the finished version of View A/B from Butterick 5891 in my sewing room, I struggle. The pattern is unique in a good way. It stretched me. It is a style that has great appeal to me. I love the colors. I had fun making it.

But when I look at it, I cannot stop myself from seeing my goof. And with these words, I vow to just let it go. Let. It. Go.

Isn't it a wonderful style though? There are so many things to like about it:

  • The funnel neck line.
  • The way the collar is simply laid in place and top-stitched down. Looks like a double collar.
  • The single inseam pocket.
  • The peplum that defies description.
  • The off-center backseam.
  • The opportunities to use interesting combinations of fabric.
  • The fit through the shoulders and chest.
  • The flare over the hip fluff.
  • The overall use of single layer fabric.
  • The asymmetrical everything.
As others have noted, the instructions are light on seam finishing. And if you wear the collar open, the wrong side of the collar shows. That's one reason I'm really glad I made a muslin.

Normally a muslin is intended to help with fit. It confirmed the fit. I could also look back at the muslin as I constructed the final version to determine when and how to finish seams. Like Marcy, I made the collar double layer - inner side in the circle print, outer side in the purple plaid - so that it looks good open or buttoned.
Love this little pocket on one side

It's a little too bad I didn't use the circle fabric for the majority of this but it is printed a little off grain. The plaid is a thread-dyed piece and I should have been able to match it better than I did.

let it go. let it go. let it go.

Great pattern, kAtheRine Tilton! Now starting the little layered dress.

  2. It is so wonderful-and I really love your bold use of fabrics here. Black, white, grey, taupe are all nice but sometimes a girl just has to break free :-) Enjoy!

  3. Great looking vest and fabric combination. Love the colors!

If you have some fabric remaining, an eSkirt would look great with it using the dots for the band, plus a coordinating solid or other fabric. Combining all sorts of dots, florals and plaids is THE thing this season.

*I deleted my first comment because it did not post as I wrote it ??

  4. Martha, this turned out lovely. Your fabric combination is wonderful and I really love the contrast fabric used inside the inner collar. As Mary noted, a little shot of color in this gray spring is so nice to see (being black/white/gray kind of gal I usually am!). I think Terri's idea of combining this vest/top with an SW E-Skirt sounds like a fun look. And, yes, let it go. Wear it with the collar open, enjoy the beautiful color and style, and no one else will ever notice. Well done!

    1. You know, Martha, the more I look at it, the more I actually kind of like the stripes being offset across the front! It seems to add a little something (in a way that I can't quite seem to be able to explain)

  5. If there's a goof, who could tell? It's an unusual asymmetrical design anyway. I love the colours and the pop of print. Wear and enjoy!

BTW, your blogging this pattern made me buy it myself today. Thanks!

  7. It took me ages to work out what the goof was, and I doubt I would have done, except for Marcy's comment. I thought it was supposed to be that way, especially with the hemline. I was looking all over for the goof, believe it or not. I think with this unusual pattern, along with the contrast pattern, very few people will see this goof.

  8. Ooooo - gotta make this. I just hate doing FBA's as I think it always screws up the origial pattern just a bit. What size did you go with and how much is the ease? Your fabric choices are fab - as usual - but please put it on and take a pic! We'd love to see just where it hits your hips/tummy area, as some of us might/will need to lengthen.

    1. Reann - I made a size 12 and it's snug across the shoulders and chest. OK snug for a summer top. I don't know about a FBA. I kind-of like this shape with my tummy - just skims over it without stopping. I'm about to post with pictures on me.

  9. LOVE your version! I have too many things in the line-up, and every time I see another wonderful version like yours I want to move this closer to the top.

  10. A thought. If you are still bothered, maybe put a thin, single layered bias binding down the right front edge. Just barely enclosing that edge with a new color from your print, or even using the print itself. A nice vertical line to catch your eye

  12. Thanks so much for reviewing this top/jacket. I'm planning to make it sometime this year. Yours is lovely and you chose great colors/fabric. I'll pin this review for future reference.

  13. I'm with Sara. I couldn't see the goof. I think we are more critical of ourselves than anyone else would be. Wear it and be proud.

    Congrats!
